The Gobi Desert, spanning the border between Mongolia and China, is a wild and dramatic landscape perfectly suited for motorcycling adventures. This 10-day tour covers 1750 km with 8 days of riding. Along the route, you’ll encounter bizarre rock formations, canyons, mountain ranges, and sprawling sand dunes that stretch up to 150 km in length. The desert also features forests of small “Saksaul” trees and other desert vegetation.

Apart from a few villages and small towns we pass through, most of the population maintains a nomadic lifestyle, often moving with their round white felt yurts (“Gers”) and herds of camels, goats, and horses.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Upon arriving in Ulaanbaatar, we will proceed to the hotel. In the afternoon or evening, there will be a meeting with the tour leader and the rest of the group for a pre-tour briefing. The meeting will cover the day-by-day itinerary and discuss safety issues. We will overnight at the hotel.

Day 2Ulaanbaatar - Baga Gazar

We’ll start early to leave Ulaanbaatar and head south towards the Gobi Desert. The road begins as a paved highway before transitioning into a rough jeep track as we traverse the green rolling hills of Tuv Province. Our destination is Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a mountainous area known for its unique granite rock formations that are home to ibex, marmots, steppe foxes, and numerous birds of prey. We’ll spend the night at a ‘Ger’ camp in this picturesque setting.

Day 3Baga gazar - Tsagaan suvarga

We’ll ride through Mandalgov, the capital town of Dundgov Province, and continue across the open steppe of Middle Gobi to reach ‘Tsagaan Suvraga’. Here, we’ll encounter an amazing series of cliffs formed from white and pink limestone, resembling stalagmites that reach heights of up to 30 meters. This site offers excellent opportunities for unique photography. We’ll spend the night at a ‘Ger’ camp nearby.

Day 4Tsagaan suvarga - Gobi gurvansaikhan

The journey to Dalanzadgad, the capital of Umnogov Province (“South Gobi”), follows a sparsely trafficked main road, embodying the Mongolia of imagination: expansive horizons, dry rocky terrain, and vast blue skies. In the distance, we’ll see the “Three Beautiful Mountains” of Gurvansaikhan Uul. Driving up into a rocky canyon, we’ll reach the end of the track and embark on a walk into the stunning ‘Yolyn Am’ canyon, known as the “Vulture’s Mouth”. We’ll spend the night at a ‘Ger’ camp nearby, immersed in this breathtaking natural landscape.

Day 5Gobi gurvansaikhan - Khongoryn els

We’ll continue our journey westward, following the “Three Beautiful Mountains” of Gurvansaikhan Uul, until we cross the range through rocky cliffs. Our destination is ‘Khongoryn Els’, where vast sand dunes meet the end of the Altai mountain range. We’ll spend the night at a ‘Ger’ camp here, surrounded by the dramatic landscape of sand and mountains.

Day 6Khongoryn Els - Bayan zag

Leaving the golden dunes of Khongoryn Els behind us, we’ll ride through a picturesque mountain pass and reach Bulgan village. Nearby is Bayanzag, known for its forest of rare ‘Saksaul’ trees and the famous ‘Flaming Cliffs’. This site is significant for its numerous dinosaur remains, and it’s where Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs during his expedition in the 1920s. We’ll spend the night at a ‘Ger’ camp near Bayanzag, immersed in the history and natural beauty of the area.

Day 7Bayanzag - Ongii hiid

Today, we’ll travel northeast to Mandal-Ovoo and then to Saikhan-Ovoo. Here, situated on a bend in the Ongi River, are the remains of the Ongii Hiid monastery, with ruins on both banks of the river. Arriving around lunchtime will give us ample time to explore the historic ruins and relax in the afternoon. We’ll spend the night at a ‘Ger’ camp nearby, surrounded by the tranquil scenery of Ongi.

Day 8Ongii hiid - Zolgol Khairkhan

We will embark on a long day’s ride northwards through Middle Gobi to reach ‘Zorgol Khairkhan’, a dramatic granite mountain featuring bizarre rock formations that stand out against the skyline. Our final night will be spent not far from Bayanunjuul village at Ovur Burd Els Sands, where we will overnight at a ‘Ger’ camp.

Day 9Zolhol Khairkhan - Ulaanbaatar

As we journey back to Ulaanbaatar, the landscape gradually transforms into greener, more mountainous terrain. Even near the city, traditional lifestyles persist, though there are more horses and fewer camels compared to what we encountered in the Gobi Desert. We anticipate arriving in Ulaanbaatar shortly after midday. We’ll spend the night at a hotel in the city.

Day 10Departure

After breakfast at the hotel, it will be time to say goodbye to our Mongolia and our guides.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia.

It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life One day however.
